Pest Tips for Central Texas Homes
A few simple habits make your home less inviting to pests. These are general tips. If you already have a problem, a professional inspection is the surest way to find the cause.
Termites
- Look for mud tubes on foundation walls, discarded wings near windows, and wood that sounds hollow when tapped.
- Keep wood, mulch, and firewood from resting against your foundation.
- Fix leaks and keep gutters clear so moisture does not collect near the house.
- If you see signs, schedule an inspection rather than guessing.
Rodents
- Seal gaps around pipes, vents, and doors. Mice can fit through very small openings.
- Store pet food and pantry items in sealed containers.
- Trim branches and vines that touch the roof or walls.
Roaches and ants
- Wipe up crumbs and spills, and do not leave dishes or pet bowls out overnight.
- Repair dripping faucets and other leaks, since both pests look for water.
- Take trash out regularly and keep bins closed.
Mosquitoes
- Empty standing water from buckets, planters, toys, and birdbaths about once a week.
- Keep gutters draining and trim thick vegetation near the house.
Fleas and ticks
- Wash pet bedding often and vacuum where pets rest.
- Keep grass trimmed and clear leaf piles near the home.
- Talk to your vet about prevention for your pets.
Spiders and scorpions
- Reduce clutter in garages, sheds, and closets where they hide.
- Shake out shoes and gloves that sit outside or in the garage.
- Wear gloves when moving stacked wood, boards, or boxes.
